For us common folk, summer vacations don’t exactly translate into exotic beaches or European excursions — and that’s okay; the South has all you need for a great getaway if you only look a little deeper. We went ahead and did all the searching for you. Here are our top picks for the perfect Southern summer road trip.

1.     Nashville, Tenn.

 If you want to check out a new music scene this summer, Nashville is definitely the place to do it. Country acts such as Darius Rucker and Lady Antebellum are both playing concerts there this June, and popular music festival Bonnaroo is being held only an hour away in Manchester. While you’re there seeing your favorite band play, don’t forget to check out their art district on 5th avenue.

o   Stay: The Hermitage Hotel, downtown and across the street from the Tennessee Museum this 5 star hotel offers convenience and luxury.
o   Dine:  Margot Café & Bar, A Zagat rated restaurant, it is known for its French and Italian menu.

2.     Charleston, S.C.
For a relaxing weekend in a beautiful historic setting, spend some time taking in the sights of downtown Charleston. Shop on King Street or walk through the French Quarter, which is known for its art scene. The Historic City Market is open 7 days a week and is the perfect spot to pick up a locally made treasure.

o   Stay: Wentworth Mansion, a family owned hotel known for its beautiful interior space.
o   Dine: FIG, a newly opened restaurant in the heart of downtown.

3.     St. Simons Island, Ga. 
Only a few hours away from Atlanta, St. Simons Island is the idyllic spot for a romantic getaway. With beautiful scenery and Spanish moss everywhere, the mix of historic charm and alluring beaches makes for an unforgettable trip.  

o   Stay:  The Inn at Sea Island.
o   Dine: Southern Soul Barbeque, a gas station turned restaurant.

4.     Asheville, N.C.
If you’re looking for something different with your summer road trip, Asheville is the place to be. As the microbrewery capital of the country, it’s the perfect place to take a brewery tour. If the outdoors is more suitable to your taste, then take a hike through Graveyard Fields, which features wildflowers and two waterfalls. 

o   Stay: Grand Bohemian Hotel, request a room with a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains and make your stay extra scenic.
o   Dine: Early Girl Eatery, a Southern comfort restaurant that offers all day breakfast.
