The Breast Intentions

Time Magazine put it all out there this issue with a cover of a mom breastfeeding a three-year-old boy.

The shocking photo promotes the issue’s cover story titled “The Man Who Remade Motherhood.” The feature exposes a rising trend among mothers called “attachment parenting,” a practice outlined in The Baby Book that is based on three main concepts:

  1. Breast-feeding for an extended period of time.
  2. Co-sleeping with your children.
  3. Baby Wearing: parents attach their children to slings.

Shot by photographer Martin Schoeller (who is no doubt enjoying the widespread exposure for such a photograph), the subject in the photo is not a model. In fact, she is a real mother named Jamie Lynne Grumet, who actually practices attachment parenting.

We believe in raising your kids however you want, but when it comes to breastfeeding, if he’s old enough to ask for it by name, he’s probably too old to have it.
